Gastro-esophageal reflux disease, often called GERD, or acid reflux, is a illness or medical condition in which the fluids in the stomach regurgitates (backs up, or refluxes) into the esophagus or food tube. This regurgitated fluid can give rise to inflammation and/or damage to the lining of the esophagus. The liquid that is refluxed usually consists of pepsin and acid that are produced by the stomach. Acid is considered to be the most damage-producing component of this regurgitated or backed up fluid. Pepsin and/or bile may also produce damage to the esophagus. Acid reflux is believed to be a chronic or lasting affliction. Once it starts up, it is usually life-long. There are a large number of medical remedies for this condition. However, once treatment for gERD or gastroesophageal reflux begins, it will usually need to be continued pretty much indefinitely.
