Gastro-esophageal reflux disease, typically referred to as GERD, or acid reflux, is a disorder or medical affliction in which the liquid content of the stomach backs up (refluxes or regurgitates) into the esophagus. This backed up liquid can bring about inflammation and/or damage to the lining of the esophagus. The liquid that is backed up commonly holds acid and pepsin that are produced by the stomach. Acid is considered to be the most damaging element of this refluxed or backed up liquid. Pepsin and bile can also cause injury of the esophagus. GERD is considered a chronically present affliction. Once it begins, it is usually life-long. There are many reparative treatments for this condition. Unfortunately,, once treatment for gERD or gastroesophageal reflux is begun, it will commonly have to be continued indefinitely.
