Gastro-esophageal reflux, typically called GERD, or acid reflux, is a disorder or medical illness in which the liquids in the stomach regurgitates (refluxes or backs up) into the esophagus. This refluxed fluid can result in damage or inflammation to the fragile lining of the esophagus. The fluid that is regurgitated commonly contains the ingredients pepsin and acid that are created in the stomach. Acid is thought the most damaging component of this refluxed or backed up fluid. Bile and/or pepsin may also produce damage to the esophagus. GERD is commonly considered a chronic illness. Once it begins, it is usually life-long. There are quite an array of medications, both OTC and prescription, for gERD. Unfortunately,, once treatment for gERD or gastroesophageal reflux begins, it will commonly have to be continued for life.
