Gastroesophageal reflux, often referred to as GERD, or acid reflux, is a disorder or medical condition in which liquid in the stomach backs up (regurgitates or refluxes) into the esophagus. This backed up liquid can lead to inflammation and/or damage to the fragile lining of the esophagus. The fluid that is regurgitated ordinarily consists of acid and pepsin that are produced in the stomach. Stomach acid is considered to be the most damage-producing constituent of this refluxed or regurgitated fluid. Bile and/or pepsin may also lead to injury of the esophagus. Acid reflux is commonly believed to be a chronic (or long-lasting) illness. Once it starts up, it is usually life-long. There are a great variety of treatments for gastroesophageal reflux. However, once treatment for gERD or acid reflux commences, it will commonly have to be continued for an indefinite time period.
