Gastro-esophageal reflux disease, typically referred to as GERD, or acid reflux, is a disorder or medical illness in which the fluid content of the stomach regurgitates (or refluxes) into the esophagus, commonly known as the food tube. This fluid can result in inflammation or damage to the fragile lining of the esophagus. The liquid that is refluxed usually contains pepsin and acid that are created in the stomach. Acid is believed to be the most damage-causing element of this regurgitated or backed up fluid. Pepsin and/or bile may also cause injury of the esophagus. Gastroesophageal reflux is commonly considered a chronic or lasting affliction. Once it starts, it is usually life-long. There are a large number of remedies for acid reflux. However, once treatment for gERD or gastroesophageal reflux is begun, it will ordinarily need to be continued for an indefinite time period.
