Gastroesophageal reflux disease, often referred to as GERD, or acid reflux, is a disorder or medical problem in which liquid in the stomach regurgitates (refluxes or backs up) into the esophagus. This refluxed fluid can give rise to inflammation or damage to the lining of the esophagus. The liquid that is backed up usually carries pepsin and acid that are created in the stomach. Stomach acid is thought to be the most damage-producing factor of this refluxed, regurgitated or backed up fluid. Bile and pepsin may also produce damage to the esophagus. Acid reflux is considered a chronic condition. Once it begins, it is usually life-long. There are a great number of medications, both OTC and prescription, for acid reflux. However, once treatment for gERD or gastroesophageal reflux begins, it will typically need to be continued pretty much indefinitely.
