Gastroesophageal reflux disease, typically called GERD, or acid reflux, is a medical disease in which the fluid content of the stomach regurgitates, backs up or refluxes into the esophagus, commonly known as the food tube. This liquid can bring about damage or inflammation to the tissue lining of the esophagus. The fluid that is refluxed generally contains acid and pepsin that are created by the stomach. Acid is considered to be the most damaging component of this refluxed or regurgitated liquid. Pepsin and/or bile can also cause injury of the esophagus. GERD is considered a chronic or lasting trouble. Once it commences, it is usually life-long. There are a number of reparative treatments for gastroesophageal reflux. Unfortunately,, once treatment for gERD or gastroesophageal reflux begins, it will generally have to be continued for life.
