Gastro-esophageal reflux, often called GERD, or acid reflux, is a medical disorder or problem in which the liquid content of the stomach refluxes or regurgitates into the esophagus or food tube. This regurgitated fluid can result in inflammation and damage to the tissue lining of the esophagus. The fluid that is refluxed usually consists of acid and pepsin that are produced in the stomach. Acid is believed the most damage-causing factor of this refluxed, regurgitated or backed up fluid. Components pepsin and bile may also cause damage to the esophagus. GERD is believed to be a chronic or lasting condition. Once it starts, it is usually life-long. There are a great variety of prescription and non-prescription medications for this condition. However, once treatment for gastroesophageal reflux or GERD is begun, it will commonly need to be continued for an indefinite time period.
