Gastro-esophageal reflux, commonly called GERD, or acid reflux, is a medical illness or condition in which liquid in the stomach backs up (refluxes or regurgitates) into the esophagus, commonly known as the food tube. This backed up liquid can give rise to damage or inflammation to the fragile lining of the esophagus. The fluid that is backed up usually contains pepsin and acid that are created by the stomach. Stomach acid is thought the most injurious ingredient of this regurgitated or backed up liquid. Components pepsin and bile may also cause injury of the esophagus. GERD is considered a chronic (or long-lasting) illness. Once it starts, it is usually life-long. There are many, many different medications for acid reflux. Unfortunately,, once treatment for gERD or acid reflux begins, it will commonly need to be continued for life.
